Specialized MRI Scans

At Tellica Imaging, we recognize that some medical conditions require a more specialized approach. Tellica Imaging goes beyond routine musculoskeletal scans, offering specialized MRI options to assist in diagnosing a wider range of conditions.

In addition to our regular comprehensive MRI scans, we offer specialized MRI scans designed to address specific needs like breast MRI and Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP).

Our imaging tests can help you identify the source of concern for your overall health. At Tellica Imaging, we offer a comprehensive suite of specialized MRI scans to assist your healthcare provider in making accurate diagnoses and guiding effective treatment plans.

MRCP for Biliary & Pancreatic Issues

MRCP, or Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography, is a specialized imaging test used to visualize the network of bile ducts and the pancreatic duct within the abdomen. Unlike traditional x-rays that expose you to radiation, MRCP utilizes strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed cross-sectional images. It can reveal the anatomy of these narrow tubes in remarkable detail.

The MRCP helps your healthcare provider to diagnose various conditions affecting the biliary system and pancreas:

  • Gallstones: These small, hardened deposits of cholesterol or bilirubin (a waste product) can form in the gallbladder or bile ducts, causing significant pain and inflammation. MRCP helps identify and pinpoint the location of gallstones, helping to determine the best treatment course.
  • Bile Duct Blockages: Blockages in the bile ducts prevent bile, a digestive fluid produced by your liver, from flowing properly into the small intestine for fat digestion. This can lead to digestive problems, such as abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. MRCP can reveal the location and cause of the blockage, including gallstones, tumors, or scar tissue from previous surgeries.
  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas, a gland responsible for producing digestive enzymes and insulin, can cause severe abdominal pain. MRCP can effectively visualize the pancreas, allowing your healthcare provider to identify signs of inflammation, such as swelling or fluid collections around the pancreas.
  • Pancreatic and Bile Duct Tumors: MRCP helps detect tumors in the bile ducts or pancreas by revealing abnormalities in the structure and size of these ducts.

Advantages of the MRCP

Compared to other imaging techniques, MRCP offers several advantages:

  • It is a non-invasive procedure, unlike other endoscopic procedures like the ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography).
  • MRCP provides a more detailed view of the bile ducts, particularly for smaller ducts that might be obscured on CT scans.
  • MRCP not only reveals the presence of abnormalities but also provides valuable information about their size, location, and potential cause.

Breast MRI

A Breast MRI is a specialized MRI scan that focuses on breast tissue. It's used in conjunction with other diagnostic techniques, such as mammograms, to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of breast health.

During the scan, contrast dye might be injected into a vein to enhance the visibility of certain tissues.

Breast MRI is a valuable tool for various purposes in women's health:

  • Screening for high-risk women
  • Evaluating suspicious findings from mammograms
  • Assessing the extent of known breast cancer

Tellica Imaging offers both abbreviated and full breast MRIs at several of our facilities. For women with dense breast tissue, people with augmentation, and those with a family history of breast cancer, an MRI can reveal details that might not be detected solely on mammograms. Breast MRI can sometimes reveal additional lesions not visible on mammograms, leading to earlier diagnosis and treatment.

Please note that abbreviated breast MRIs or fast breast MRIs are traditionally a cash pay procedure as health insurance may not cover this exam.
